Cultivating Scholarly Inquiry
The JABSOM Research Interest Group (JRIG) is a student-led organization that promotes activities fostering medical student involvement in research. The JRIG works closely with the JABSOM Director of Medical Student Research, JRIG faculty advisors, and other clinical/research faculty to disseminate research opportunities to students, provide peer-to-peer research support, promote available research resources, and organize professional development events.
The JRIG encourages medical students to begin developing mentored relationships with local clinical and basic science researchers early in their first year, allowing the opportunity to make substantial research contributions throughout their medical education. Medical students are encouraged to join the JRIG during orientation week but are welcomed into its membership at any time. To learn more about the JRIG and its upcoming events, please contact the JRIG Student Officers or current faculty advisors Dr. Kristy Shine, Dr. David Horio, and Dr. Rachel Rivers.
Research Interest Group Events
The JRIG organizes a variety of professional development opportunities throughout the year which have included:
A Primer to Clinical Research – a general introduction to the different types of research (retrospective chart review, case reports, systematic reviews, etc.).
MS4 Post-Match Research Panel – MS4 students in various specialties discuss their research, residency application/interview experiences, and their perceptions regarding how research affected their residency match.
Research Journal Club – a resident-guided, small group opportunity to learn about something new and develop research critical skills; hosted in collaboration with the Internal Medicine Interest Group (IMIG).
Q&A panels with Hawaiʻi Residency Program Directors – hear from local residency program directors offering a glimpse into research expectations and its impact on candidates for residency.
