With a heavy heart, JABSOM announces the passing of Kurtis Murata.

Kurtis started with the University of Hawaiʻi in 2000 and worked in the Parking Office on the Mānoa campus. He came to JABSOM when the building opened in 2005 and held various roles here, most recently serving as a fiscal specialist.

Kurtis’ family remembers him as “a person of unwavering kindness and fierce conviction who lived a life defined by compassion, integrity and an unshakable sense of justice. With his quiet generosity and fearless advocacy, he made an indelible impact on many.”

You may have seen Kurtis around campus and hanging out with his good pal, Donald Garces, at the security desk.

“It was always a good time with Kurtis,” Garces said. “He loved playing the guitar and would always talk about his love for music.”

Kurtis will be remembered for his huge heart and smile, which always projected warmth and energy.

“He was quiet but friendly,” remembered Deb Austin. “He always had a smile and a laugh for anyone who stopped by to chat.”

JABSOM lost Murata just months before he was set to celebrate 25 years with the University.

“Kurtis was looking forward to celebrating his anniversary so much,” Janet Meeks said. “He served in various roles on campus, so he had the opportunity to interact with ʻohana from various departments and could always be counted on to provide a friendly smile.”

One stop including time working in JABSOM’s mailroom.

“During his time in the mailroom Kurtis was very easy to work with and was very helpful to those around him,” Lance Sodetani said. “He was very passionate about his work and was looking forward to retirement.”
