It’s the end of an era in our Pediatrics Department. After more than three decades of service, Dr. Ken Nakamura is retiring. Ken joined JABSOM in 1987 as an Assistant Professor and became a full Professor in 1999. He held the department chair position since 2011. We wish him all the best in his retirement!

We are concluding our search for the new Pediatrics chair. As this national search wraps up, we want to share who will assume interim roles.

JABSOM Interim Dept. of Pediatrics Chair is Dr. Venkataraman Balaraman, MBBS.

Dr. Balaraman currently serves as the Pediatrics Vice Chair and Associate Chair for Research in the same department.

As a neonatologist and former Division Director of Neonatology, Dr. Balaraman's ongoing and recent interests in neonatal research stem from his previous role as the Program Director of the Neonatal-Perinatal Fellowship Program, a position he held for seven years. Dr. Balaraman is currently the Principal Investigator of the HIPACT2 grant, an ISPCTN-ECHO project funded by the NIH.
In addition to his research efforts, Dr. Balaraman is dedicated to pediatric education and the mentorship of resident and medical student trainees. He has also served as the faculty representative for pharmaceutical and investigator-initiated research, and he is actively involved in research ethics, regulation, and advocacy at JABSOM.

HPHMG Interim Pediatric Department Chief is Dr. Russell Woo, MD, FACS.
