For over 20 years, locals and tourists have been visiting the Sakaguchi family’s Blue Water Shrimp food trucks and restaurants. In February, this local, family-owned restaurant will open at JABSOM. They are excited to offer some of the most competitive prices in town, along with a 20% discount for JABSOM students, faculty, and staff.

As Sushi King closed last year and the owner of Pur Sina decided to retire this year, JABSOM is excited to announce the opening of Blue Water Shrimp on February 7th. Located on the Ewa side of Cafe Waiola, Blue Water Shrimp will eventually occupy both sides later this spring. The restaurant will operate from Monday to Friday, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.

“Blue Water Shrimp is committed to offering healthy and ono food at an affordable price,” said Melia Young, the Director of Event Management Services at JABSOM. “Our prices will be approximately 30% lower than those at their Hilton Hawaiian location, and that’s before applying the JABSOM discount.”

Diners at Blue Water Shrimp’s JABSOM location will find a unique menu exclusive to the medical school that features a variety of breakfast options, lattes, and açaí bowls.  Additional sandwiches will also be available, including the Grilled F.O.D Sandwich, Croissant Breakfast Sandwich, and the Signature Fresh Catch of the Day with Creamy Oriental and Grilled Chicken Caesar salads.

Blue Water Shrimp is no stranger to JABSOM, having catered the senior luau for the Class of 2022. Co-creator brothers Chef Glen and Gilbert Sakaguchi are excited to share their original recipes with the JABSOM ʻohana.

“We had a great time catering the luau. The campus is beautiful and centrally located,” said Gilbert Sakaguchi II, the Blue Water Shrimp’s current president. “I had friends who graduated from JABSOM, and I witnessed the hard work and dedication the students put into becoming physicians and scientists. My family fully supports JABSOM’s mission to train our future healthcare professionals and leaders, so we’re honored to serve the students, faculty, and staff. Offering these discounted options is just one of the ways we can support the mission.”

Blue Water Shrimp started as a food truck in Kahuku in 2005, expanded to Haleʻiwa in 2006 and soon spread throughout the island with ten trucks. While the Blue Water Shrimp team remains mobile, they have dedicated locations at Hilton Hawaiian Village and on Kamehameha Hwy in Wahiawā.
