SALUTE TO THOSE WHO SERVE: Two new MD Alumni become “Captain MDs”

Date: May 21st, 2015 in Alumni News, Care, JABSOM News, Student Life    Print or PDF

Our latest MD military members.

One of the most stirring moments at Convocation 2015 for the John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM) was the sight of two young MDs, hands raised to swear the oath of military service, where they will be MDs-in-training and then serve in the military medical system. The oath, administered by Professor William Haning, MD (USN, Retired) also promoted the two young men to the rank of Captain (they were Lieutenants during their time at the University of Hawaii medical school).

Captain Mark Pilar, MD is headed to Walter Reed National Military Med Center for his Residency training in Internal Medicine and Psychiatry. Capt. Pilar’s dad, also proudly wearing a US Army uniform, helped to pin the captain’s bars on his son’s shoulders.

Claire Pilar (Mother) hugs Capt. Mark Pilar, MD at Convocation, while Pilar's words are read aloud: “When you came to America as a teenager, you dreamed of going to college but never had the chance. Thirty-seven years later I stand here today because of your sacrifices. Thank you Mom.”

Captain Justin Grubbs, MD heads to Virginia Mason Medical Center in Seattle to begin his duty as a resident MD.

Justin's wife Sarah Ryan Grubbs and his mother-in-law pinned the captain's bars on Justin's shoulders. Later, Capt. Grubb's words of thanks were read aloud, “I am indebted to my gracious and beautiful wife Sarah for enduring it all. You are, quite literally, the best person period. And to my incredible parents and in-laws: the world needs more parents like you.”
