This weekend, the University of Hawaiʻi John A. Burns School of Medicine (UH JABSOM) held its first on-campus convocation ceremony in Kakaʻako to honor its newest physicians. The JABSOM MD Class of 2021 includes 68 doctors– 12 of them are Native Hawaiian; 7 are from rural communities on Maui and Hawaiʻi Island; one is a military physician, Dr. Darreon Schwartz, who was promoted to Lieutenant in the Navy from ensign and will train at the Tucson Hospitals Medical Education Program before specializing in anesthesiology at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland.

In July, the new doctors will begin graduate medical education in specialty programs in Hawaiʻi and on the mainland but as Dr. Nolwenn Phan remarked, “I’m off to the Emerald City (Seattle) but there will always be no place like home.” Fifty-nine percent of the JABSOM’s newest physicians overwhelmingly chose primary care specialties, which provide the first contact for the majority of patients, and includes internal medicine, family medicine, emergency medicine, pediatrics and obstetrics-gynecology.

The hybrid ceremony was held outdoors under a tent next to the medical school and the UH Cancer Center and was limited to only the graduates, 2 guests per graduate and few faculty in attendance. The ceremony was live streamed on the JABSOM YouTube channel. The MD Class of 2021, who have all been vaccinated, were seated onstage and several check-in stations obtained contact tracing information from all guests prior to the start of the event.

In addition, JABSOM also held its first-ever Commencement ceremony for its students graduating with concentrations in disciplines including Medical Technology; Communication Sciences Disorders; Cell and Molecular Biology; Developmental and Reproductive Biology; Quantitative Health Sciences; and Tropical Medicine. The earlier hybrid commencement ceremony celebrated eight bachelor’s degrees, 30 master’s degrees and two PhDs. More photos and coverage will be posted later this week.
