The Department of Tropical Medicine, Medical Microbiology and Pharmacology is honored to host a memorial seminar celebrating the lives and legacies of our esteemed colleagues, the late Dr. Diane Wallace-Taylor and Dr. Gordon Wallace, who served on the faculty of the University of Hawai'i John A. Burns School of Medicine (UH JABSOM) for many years.
Dr. Wallace-Taylor, who earned her Ph.D. from UH Mānoa in 1975, had a distinguished career in malaria research spanning continents. She conducted groundbreaking work in the United States and Africa, serving on the faculty at Georgetown University before joining JABSOM’s Department of Tropical Medicine, Medical Microbiology and Pharmacology. An internationally renowned malaria researcher, Dr. Wallace-Taylor mentored numerous students throughout her career, leaving an indelible mark on the field. Dr. Gordon Wallace, an adjunct professor at JABSOM, conducted extensive research on tropical diseases throughout the Pacific Islands. His work was instrumental in identifying the pathogens responsible for rat lungworm disease and toxoplasmosis, contributing significantly to our understanding of these conditions.
Following their retirement, Drs. Wallace-Taylor and Wallace established an endowment to support graduate students in Tropical Medicine, enabling them to disseminate their research through peer-reviewed publications and presentations at national and international conferences."
