Nearly 100 people gathered at Kuakini Medical Center’s Hale Pulama Mau Auditorium to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the University of Hawai‘i Hyperbaric Treatment Center (HTC). Operated by University Health Partners of Hawai‘i (UHP), the milestone event honored four decades of lifesaving service, groundbreaking research, and community impact in hyperbaric medicine.
The celebration featured guided facility tours, a clinical information session, and historical displays highlighting HTC’s evolution and achievements. Attendees included several state Legislators, a Honolulu City Councilman, physicians, staff, and community members, all reflecting on HTC’s role as the Pacific’s only 24/7 public hyperbaric facility.
During the program, HTC was formally recognized with two official certificates. One from the State of Hawai‘i Legislature and one from the Honolulu City Council in honor of its 40 years of service. The event commemorated and highlighted HTC’s critical contributions to the health of our community and diver safety across the islands.
Since its opening in 1983, HTC has treated well over 5,000 patients and is on track to complete more than 40,000 individual treatments by the end of 2025. The Center continues to deliver advanced hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) for 16 Medicare and Undersea and Hyperbaric Medicine Society recognized indications including: divers with decompression sickness, as well as patients suffering from diabetic lower limb ulcers, cancer survivors with radiation treatment-related injuries, sudden hearing loss, severe infections, and other complex wounds
