Meet Maison Hakikawa and Danny Char, the newest members of our grounds team at JABSOM.

Both have joined us in the last two months and they've already made a big impression. If you've noticed how sharp the lawns look and how welcoming the campus feels, that's thanks to their hard work.

Hakikawa brings experience working with native plants and landscaping, and he takes pride in creating a space that feels good for all who visit our campus. He says hearing positive feedback from staff and faculty makes him proud, because his goal is to provide an environment that people enjoy.

Char returns to JABSOM after nine years away where he was working at KCC.

You’ll see the Hawaiʻi state flag on the cart they drive and that's Hakikawa’s touch. He says it's about representing pride and recognizing the importance of Native Hawaiian health within our community.

“I noticed JASBOM has a Department of Native Hawaiian Health and over the past few years I've been learning Lomi and it's nice to see the university having a space where Native Hawaiians can address our health issues, which is pretty unique.”

Hakikawa and Char fill the shoes of Jimmy Handy, who recently moved back to Alaska. They are some of the friendliest people on campus, so when you see them, please give a warm mahalo to Maison and Danny for all they do!
