Elizabeth Tam, M.D.

Dr. Elizabeth (Liz) Tam is Professor and Chair of Medicine and the American Lung Association of Hawai‘i and Leahi Fund Endowed Chair in Respiratory Health at the University of Hawai‘i John A. Burns School of Medicine in Honolulu. A Kalani Falcon, she attended UH before transferring to and graduating from UC Davis.  She earned her MD at UC San Francisco and completed her internal medicine residency at the Brigham and Women's Hospital/Harvard Medical School. Interdigitated with husband Mark Grattan's bi-coastal training in Transplant and Cardiovascular Surgery, Liz completed her clinical and research requirements in Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine at the combined respiratory program of Brigham and Beth Israel Hospitals in Boston,  a Parker B. Francis Research Fellowship at the Cardiovascular Research Institute at UCSF, and her first faculty appointment at UC San Diego.  Liz joined the JABSOM faculty in 1992 and is in her 10th year of chairing the Department of Medicine.

In between caring for patients in the faculty practice, helping with ~8 re-accreditations, steering grants to explore environment-genetic interactions in asthma, she enjoys checking on kids Ryan and Lauren on the mainland (the nest gets bigger and virtual, not empty!). Other favorite activities: racking up Fitbit steps, enjoying big ohana dinners, and tropical organic gardening in the style of the old Hawaiians.  Did you know the Hawaiians could grow 50-lb sweet potatoes?  Liz hasn't - Yet.
