Cedric Akau, MD, MPH

Dr. Cedric Akau is the Medical Director of the Straub Bone and Joint Center and Associate Clinical Professor and Chief of the Division of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the John A. Burns School of Medicine. His clinical practice focuses on the evaluation and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders with the goal of helping patients reach their highest level of functional capabilities.

Dr. Akau received a Bachelor's degree in Biology from Whitman College and Masters degrees in Pharmacology and Public Health (Gerontology) from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. He graduated from the John A. Burns School of Medicine and completed his residency at the University of Michigan. He is board certified in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Sports Medicine, and Electrodiagnostic Medicine. He is a team physician for the athletic program at Punahou School and a volunteer team physician at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa. Dr Akau has shared his clinical expertise at many community-based athletic and health events and has been an active member of several organizations focused on improving the health of Native Hawaiians and people with disabilities.

Through his work at Straub, the John A. Burns School of Medicine and in the community, Dr. Akau passionately advocates a team approach to improve the quality of life for each individual patient and the health and well-being of our community. He enjoys spending his free time with his family, dancing hula, singing, gardening and staying in shape.
