Exciting news from the JABSOM Primary Care Sports Medicine Fellowship!

Representatives from the John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM) Sports Medicine Fellowship had presentations on three of the five days of the American Medical Society for Sports Medicine (AMSSM) 2015 Annual Conference in Hollywood, Florida this past April. The AMSSM includes members who specialize solely in non-surgical sports medicine and serve as team physicians at the youth level, and for the NCAA, NFL, MLB, NBA, WNBA, MLS and NHL, as well as with Olympic teams.

Highlights from the conference included national speakers, poster presentations, and representing JABSOM in the annual sports medicine fellowship fair. Dr. Andrew Nichols (Sports Medicine Fellowship Director) Dr. Justin Young (Sports Medicine Faculty/Straub Bone and Joint Clinic), Dr. Chris Lynch (Current Sports Medicine Fellow), Dr. Linnea Engel (Incoming Sports Medicine Fellow), Nikki Castel (MS3) and Courtney Kandler (MS2) all made the trip to Florida and were active presenters.

Dr. Lynch surveyed the opinions and best practices of primary care sports medicine directors on use of the screening ECG during the pre-participation exam (PPE). He presented in a special sub-group which consisted of sports cardiology research.

The fellowship fair is an annual display of many different fellowships in the U.S. offering positions for Primary Care Sports Medicine. Dr. Nichols, Dr. Young, Dr. Lynch and Dr. Engel were present to represent JABSOM and the state of Hawaiʻi. There were many interested applicants who visited the booth during the fair.

About our Sports Medicine Faculty
Dr. Andrew Nichols has served as Program Director of the University of Hawai’i Sports Medicine Fellowship Program since its establishment in 2002. He was Head Team Physician for the UH Mānoa Athletics Department from 1994 until 2011, when he was appointed as Director of University Health Services Mānoa. He has also served as Team Physician for USA National Soccer and Water Polo teams. Dr. Nichols is a graduate of Stanford University, where he was a 4-year varsity letterman in competitive swimming. He received his medical degree from Wake Forest University School of Medicine and completed his Family Medicine residency and Sports Medicine fellowship at UCLA. Dr. Nichols is Board certified in Family Medicine and holds a CAQ in Sports Medicine. His research interests include sports injury management outcomes, the use of complementary-alternative medicine by athletes, knee pain in aquatics athletes, and evidence based medicine in Sports Medicine particularly as it applies to sports and athletic medicine in Hawai’i and the Pacific region.

Dr. Justin Young joined the UH Sports Medicine Fellowship Program faculty in October 2013. He is an Assistant Team Physician for the UH Mānoa Athletics Department and a sports medicine physician at the Straub Clinic Bone & Joint Center of Hawaiʻi Pacific Health. Dr. Young earned his undergraduate degree from the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa and medical degree from JABSOM. He completed Internal Medicine residency training at University of Hawai’i and a Sports Medicine Fellowship at the Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center in El Paso. Dr. Young is Board-Certified in Internal Medicine and Sports Medicine. He has research interests in Wilderness Medicine.

Dr. Gale Prentiss has served as Head Team Physician for the UH Mānoa Athletics Department since 2011. She received her undergraduate degree from Wellesley College, medical degree from JABSOM, Family Medicine residency training at Scottsdale Healthcare, and Sports Medicine fellowship training at UC Davis. Dr. Prentiss previously was a Team Physician at UC Davis. She is Board-certified in Family Medicine and holds a CAQ in Sports Medicine.

AMSSM is a multi-disciplinary organization of 2,700+ sports medicine physicians dedicated to education, research, advocacy and the care of athletes of all ages. The majority of AMSSM members are primary care physicians with fellowship training and added qualification in sports medicine who then combine their practice of sports medicine with their primary specialty.
