ALUMNI NEWS: Hilo MD Melanie Arakaki (JABSOM MD 1998) selected family medicine preceptor of the year

Date: March 6th, 2012 in Alumni News, Faculty, JABSOM News    Print or PDF

Dr. Melani Arakaki has been selected as the 2011 Department of Family Medicine preceptor of the year, for her outstanding teaching and commitment to family medicine medical student education.

Dr. Arakaki is a 1998 graduate of the John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM). She also performed her Family Medicine Residency training at the University of Hawai’i before returning to her native Hilo to practice family medicine. While serving in a very busy practice in a critical physician-shortage area of the state, Dr. Arakaki accepts third-year JABSOM M.D. students into her practice to experience Hawai’i Island rural medicine and to learn from her—one of our terrific local-grown MD’s.

Last fall, Dr. Arakaki was an inspiring speaker at a “Dean’s Circle” recognition event for outstanding donors to the UH medical school. Donors play a critical role in making quality health care accessible to our state by helping JABOM to support clinical outreach and clerkship training in rural and neighbor island communities.
