Medical Education Diversity Programs
JABSOM fosters diversity through pipeline activities and healthcare workforce programs, faculty and staff development, and incorporating diversity throughout the medical school curriculum. Below are some examples of how JABSOM is achieving diversity through pipeline partnerships.
HEALTHCARE WORKFORCE
Area Health Education Center (AHEC)
The mission of the Hawaii/Pacific Basin AHEC is to improve the health of the underserved through education. There are four main activity areas: Educating and recruiting students to health professions from K-12 schools. Educating health professions students in the rural and underserved communities of Hawaii, often in multiprofessional teams. Recruiting health care professionals to rural and underserved areas and providing continuing education. Providing community based and community driven education for all underserved groups in Hawaii.

Health Careers Opportunity Program (HCOP)

HCOP provides and educational pathway to health careers at the University of Hawaiʻi at Mānoa (UHM), Kapiolani Community College (KCC), and Leeward Community College (LCC). High school students explore various health career fields and learn about college entrance requirements and campus life through a summer residential program. College students receive academic advising, individualized counseling and other support services as they pursue and complete their health degree programs

ʻImi Hoʻōla Post-Baccalaureate Program

ʻImi Hoʻōla (Hawaiian for “those who seek to heal”) has played a major role in accomplishing the mission of the John A. Burns School of Medicine. ʻImi Hoʻōla is a 12-month post-baccalaureate program in the Department of Native Hawaiian Health designed to provide educational opportunities to students from disadvantaged backgrounds who are deemed capable of succeeding in medical school. Although ʻImi Ho’ōla is not limited to persons of Hawaiian, Filipino, Samoan, Chamorro or Micronesian descent, a large number of these students have demonstrated that they are from a disadvantaged background.

Native Hawaiian Center of Excellence (NHCOE)
The Native Hawaiian Center of Excellence (NHCOE) seeks to improve the health of Native Hawaiians through education, research, and community initiatives that enable Native Hawaiians to successfully pursue careers in medicine and other health professions. NHCOE is part of the Department of Native Hawaiian Health at the University of Hawaiʻi John A. Burns School of Medicine.
