The streets of downtown Honolulu were filled with people of all ages, many carrying signs promoting nonviolence, as they marched in the 2017 Men’s March Against Domestic Violence.

Dean Jerris Hedges of the John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM) — and the University of Hawai’i as a whole — turned out once again in a cause championed at UH the past several years by Dr. Hedges, a former Honorary Chair of the demonstration.

The march is held in memory of those who have suffered injuries and lost their lives to domestic violence. Dr. David Lassner, President of the University of Hawaiʻi System, struck a bell as each name of those who died this year was read, a tradition at the annual march. Lassner was also selected this year as “Distinguished Citizen of the Year” by march organizers. Lassner was heralded for his support of the march and the encouragement he has shown for the cause.

Catholic Charities Hawaiʻi, the City & County of Honolulu, HGEA, Domestic Violence Action Center, Mental Health America of Hawaiʻi and Parents & Children Together (PACT) are the presenting organizations at this year’s march.
