He joined the School of Medicine in 1988 as Associate Dean and became Senior Associate Dean in 1999. He was Chair of the School of Medicine’s Admissions Committee for three decades. He is Director of the Office of International Medicine/Health. He was a Fellow with the American College of Education, class of 1982-83 assigned as a Special Assistant to the President of the University of Hawaii. Prior to joining the University, he was the Executive Director of the Regional Medical Program of Hawaii and the Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands, and Superintendent of a 860-bed institution in Hawaii for the mentally retarded. His international experiences include teaching in Yugoslavia as a volunteer with the American Friends Service Committee and as Project Director in the Pacific Basin countries and Thailand.
Satoru’s current professional interests are in administration of programs for the elderly and geropsychology. He is a licensed psychologist, nursing home administrator, and occupational therapist. He is a fellow of the American Occupational Therapy Association and the American Association of Mental Retardation.
