The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD; formerly the Division of Speech Pathology and Audiology) in an interrelated discipline that deals with disorders of speech-language and hearing. Audiology is the study of human hearing and the diagnosis and treatment of hearing-related disorders. Speech-language pathology is the study of human communication and its developed or acquired disorders. Through these two disciplines, students have the opportunity to earn an education and gain valuable work experience with a wide variety of disabilities and disorders affecting people of all ages. The CSD program is one of the few programs in the United States that also features preparation in a multilingual/multicultural environment.

The Department of Communication Sciences and Disorders currently offers a Bachelor of Science degree in speech-language pathology and audiology and a Master of Science degree with a major in speech pathology. In accordance with new accreditation standards of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association, the program leading to a Master of Science degree in Audiology at the University of Hawaii has closed effective December 31, 2006. No further applications for the Master of Science degree in Audiology are being accepted.

All prospective undergraduate and graduate students who have an interest in speech-language and hearing should contact the CSD at (808) 956-8279 to obtain a copy of the outline of the program. Undergraduate students who have an interest in CSD should arrange for consultation and advising prior to initial enrollment in the program. All students within the CSD program are strongly encouraged to meet with their academic advisor prior to registration each semester.

The Communication Sciences and Disorders Program is accredited (2007-2012) by the Council of Academic Accreditation in Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology (CAA) of the American Speech, Language, and Hearing Association (ASHA).
