Office of Medical Education

Introduction | Faculty & Staff

The Office of Medical Education is tasked with supporting the implementation and evaluation of the medical student educational experience, primarily in the first and second years of study known as the pre-clinical years. In addition to this vital mission of supporting medical student education, the office is also involved in providing faculty development activities – primarily in teaching and curriculum development – and supporting educational reform efforts in selected partner medical schools in Asia

The office coordinates a number of community based programs, including:
  • Required Community Health course series that place students in various community health organizations and runs throughout the first-year curriculum
  • School Health Education Program that partners medical school faculty and students with teachers and students in the Hawaii public high school system in an innovative program to teach health education
  • Unit 6 Longitudinal Clerkship Program that provides clinical training experiences for third-year medical students on Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island.
Faculty members are also active in educational research. Current projects include looking at outcomes related to the medical school’s unique problem-based learning curriculum, measuring the benefits of various curricular programs, and exploring the effectiveness of new methods of teaching and learning.
