Application Procedure
The School of Medicine participates in the American Medical
College Application Service (AMCAS). The service permits an
applicant to file a single application which is forwarded to
as many participating medical schools as designated. AMCAS then
forwards UH a copy of the completed application, and the applicant
is contacted soon thereafter. AMCAS applications are available
online at: www.aamc.org.
The latest date to take the MCAT for JABSOM application inclusion is in September of
the year of application (no later than May for Early Decision applicants).
International students (includes applicants from Canada) who meet the requirements
for admission may apply to JABSOM by submitting an application to AMCAS.
AMCAS Application Deadline to the 2013 Entering Class is November 1, 2012
AMCAS Deadline Extensions will not be granted by JABSOM to applicants beyond the
November 1, 2012 (EST) AMCAS deadline. Applicants are advised to check directly with
AMCAS to ensure their applications are received by November 1, 2012.
Competitive applicants with clear ties to Hawai‘i are encouraged
to apply as Early Decision candidates. The School of Medicine
conducts interviews from August through September for Early Decision
candidates.
AMCAS Early Decision Application Deadline to the 2013 Entering Class is
August 1, 2012.
JABSOM Application Processing Fee:
A $150 application processing fee* will be assessed to all applicants submitting an application to JABSOM.

Residency Screening for Application Purposes:
The John A. Burns School of Medicine's first
priority is to admit resident applicants with strong ties to the State
of Hawai‘i. All applicants go through two screening processes. The initial
Residency screen is to determine an applicant's ties to Hawai'i. To determine
status as a 'resident' or 'nonresident' for application purposes to the University
of Hawai'i John A. Burns School of Medicine, an applicant is scored on the following
six criteria on the Residency Screen: 1) legal residence of the applicant, 2) legal
residence of the applicant's parents, 3) birthplace, 4) location of high school graduated,
5) location of college or university attended (degree not required) and 6) Legacy - parent/legal
guardian is a JABSOM faculty member (FTE 50% or >) or JABSOM graduate. The information will be
accessed from the applicant's AMCAS application. An applicant is required to have a minimum of
three out of the six criteria indicating ties to the State of Hawai'i to be considered a 'resident'
for application purposes. An applicant who has less than the minimum three points will be
considered a 'nonresident' for application purposes. The Residency Screen is not to eliminate
an applicant at this stage of the application process. The screen is used to determine whether an applicant
proceeding to the Secondary/Academic Screen is a 'resident' or 'nonresident'.
Secondary/Academic Screen:
The Secondary/Academic Screen requires both 'resident' and 'nonresident' applicants to
meet a minimum cut-off score in order to proceed in the admissions process. The Secondary/Academic
screen sets a higher cut-off for nonresident applicants than for resident applicants.
Interview Process:
The School of Medicine invites an applicant go through three interviews in Hawai'i. Interviews are
conducted from August through February. All interviews are to be completed by February 28.
JABSOM's pool of volunteer interviewers are comprised of clinical and basic science faculty,
physicians, JABSOM alumni, members of the medical community, and fourth-year medical students.
An applicant has two one-on-one interviews assigned from this pool of interviewers. Each
interviewer will receive the applicant’s AMCAS Personal Comments essay and the two JABSOM essays
prior to the interview. Interviewers are not given the academic transcripts or MCAT scores of an applicant.
A third interview is conducted by the Assistant Director of Admissions.

Letters of Recommendation:
Applicants who are invited for interviews by JABSOM will be instructed to submit a minimum of two letters of
recommendation or a school's composite letter of recommendation directly to the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS) Letter Service.
JABSOM will electronically receive all letters directly from AMCAS.
This service will allow letter writers or schools to submit their letters one time to AMCAS (vs.
having to send multiple letters to individual medical schools). AMCAS will receive letters from
users of VirtualEvals, Interfolio, and via the mail. In addition, letter writers have the option
to upload letters directly to AMCAS through the AMCAS Letter Writer Application.
NOTE: JABSOM will ONLY accept letters directly from the AMCAS service; therefore,
instruct your letter writers or schools to mail or electronically upload their letters directly
to AMCAS. For further instructions, please see the AAMC website:
www.aamc.org
Admissions Status Timeline:
All interviewed applicants are reviewed and rated by the Admissions
Committee upon completion of their application dossier. The Admissions Committee anticipates
completion of review by mid-March. By late March, applicants are notified of their
final admissions status. The class is comprised of 58 resident applicants. Nonresident candidates must
be highly ranked, preferably with some ties to Hawai'i, to be accepted (approximately 8
nonresidents). A waitlist is made up of applicants ranked lower.
No additional supplementary material is requested of applicants on the waitlist. Waitlisted
applicants will remain in their rank order based on the Admissions Committee composite rate score.
The John A. Burns School of Medicine does not use a rolling admissions process. Exceptional
candidates rated highly and recommended by the Admissions Committee for early notification of
acceptance will be offered an acceptance after review rather than at the end of the admissions
process.
The School of Medicine asks applicants with multiple acceptances to make a final decision in
accordance with AAMC Traffic Rules. No deposit is required to hold a seat in the class.
The school does not encourage deferred admission. Accepted applicants wanting to defer must have a
unique circumstance or an exceptional reason. Requests for deferment are reviewed on a case-by-case
basis by the Director and/or Admissions Committee.
JABSOM does not ordinarily consider requests for advanced standing (transfer) to the MD Program. Please refer to the
Admissions Policy for Advanced Standing.
