Two entities within the Dean’s Office at JABSOM are tasked with coordinating the school’s efforts
in the global health arena:

The Office of Global Health and Medicine. The Director of this office is the Senior
Associate Dean, Dr Satoru Izutsu (sizutsu@hawaii.edu),
who is advised by the Committee on Global Health and Medicine (CGHM). The CGHM develops and
recommends policy for the School of Medicine in the areas of international health and medicine,
international medical education, and international basic, clinical and public health
research. The CGHM establishes and maintains relationships with partner institutions,
healthcare organizations, healthcare providers, and health researchers to facilitate the efforts
of the School in addressing global health issues pertinent to Hawaii.

The Asia-Pacific Academic Consortium for Public Health (APACPH). APACH is an
international non-profit organization, comprising Schools of Public Health from around the
world (http://www.apacph.org). APACPH
is dedicated to improving medical and public health education for health professionals. Dr
Walter Patrick (walterp@hawaii.edu) is the current APACPH
Secretary General.
NON-CREDIT ACTIVITIES & PROGRAMS
Global Health Interest Group
The Global Health Interest Group is a group of medical students, practicing physicians, and others
with an interest in issues of social justice and medicine as applied both locally in Hawaii and around
the developing world.
Philippine Medical Student Association of Hawaii
PMSAH is a group of medical students, faculty and practicing physicians interested in health issues of
the Philippines and Filipinos living in Hawaii. PMSAH is sponsored by the Philippine Medical

Program for Medical Education in East Asia (PMEEA)
Selected first year medical students can participate in a non-credit cultural exchange experience in
East Asia in June or July of each year. In 2008 12 students visited one of four schools for two
weeks: Kochi Medical School (Shikoku), Osaka Medical College, Keio University, and Saga University.

Area Health Education Center (AHEC)
AHEC provides partial support and assistance in developing credited and non-credited experiences at
AHEC sites throughout the Pacific Basin (Palau, Saipan, American Samoa, & Micronesia). Contact:
