BLESSING FOR NEW WELLNESS CENTER

Dr. Harrigan at the Wellness Center Blessing
The Department of Complementary and Alternative Health Care at the John A. Burns School of Medicine has opened a center for patients interested in receiving care provided with a holistic approach to wellness.
The Wellness Center has been the dream of Dr. Rosanne Harrigan, Chair of the Department of Complementary and Alternative Health Care. Dr. Harrigan untied the maile lei to open the doors of the center following an oli, or Hawaiian Chant. A public opening event is planned later.
The Wellness Center was blessed by Kahu Kamaki Kanehele in a ceremony at the school’s Kaka′ako campus.Kanehele is also a healer and Director of the Native Hawaiian Traditional Healing Center, at the Wai′anae Comprehensive Health Center. He was joined in the blessing ceremony by Dr. Terry Shintani, a physician who has also studied Hawaiian medicine under Kanehele for 18 years. Dr. Shintani delivered the oli, or Hawaiian chant, chosen for the occasion. Dr. Shintani is the Associate Chair of the Department of Complementary and Alternative Medicine. Members of the Department practice at the new Wellness Center.
“Our mission is to practice integrative medicine by integrating allopathic medicine and complementary/alternative holistic as well as non-traditional methods and approaches that are not being fully used by health care providers,” said department Chair Dr. Harrigan.
The Wellness Center will offer healing methods from many cultures. The practitioners present for the blessing included those in ancient Chinese medicine, in Ayurveda, India’s ancient healing system, and of the Native Hawaiian healing.
